Guest Post: Wheatgrass Juice Without A Juicer

I am so excited to have Jacqueline guest posting today. Jacqueline is one of my former students and through the wonders of social media, I have been fortunate enough to stay in contact with her. I have been thrilled to follow along as she has discovered more natural remedies and developed a passion for all that is healthy, holistic and good for the body, mind, soul and earth. She recently posted about making wheat grass juice without a juice. My head nearly exploded from the wisdom she dropped and I was super stoked to try!

I am a huge wheat grass juice fan and feel a wonderful energetic lift from a shot. A wheat grass shot has normally been an extravagant treat, when I was at a juice bar or natural foods market. Knowing I can have this delicious and healthy treat more accessibly has made me down right giddy. I will let Jacqueline take it from here and share how to easily make this shot of wellness, anytime of day.

Greetings! I’d like to firstly thank Angie, for allowing me to be apart of her blog and share with you all something I am very passionate about. My name is Jacqueline and I love learning and practicing with herbs, oils and all remedies that come from our mother earth!

Nature has everything living beings need to be healthy! I have recently been learning about all the incredible benefits of wheatgrass and the purist form to ingest it. Making wheatgrass juice is the best way to receive all of the nutrients it has to offer. Before researching different methods for making it, I would drink it from local juice bars or just blend it up in my blender. With further research, I found out that blending strips away most of its benefits and juicing is good but most places cut the blades from its roots way before serving to their costumers. Since wheatgrass is alive it needs to be taken that way in order for you to get the complete benefits, drinking it as soon as possible after it has been cut from its roots is best. After twenty minutes its nutritional value begins to decrease.

Wheat grass is powerful! Here are some benefits…

  • Wheatgrass juice contains up to 70% chlorophyll, which is an important blood builder.
  • Science has proven that chlorophyll stops growth and development of bad bacteria.
  • Chlorophyll is antibacterial and can be used inside and outside the body as a natural remedy.
  • Chlorophyll improves blood sugar problems, helps purify the liver and neutralizes toxins.
  • Compared to other fruits and vegetables, wheat grass juice is superior as a detoxification agent.
  • 2 ounces of wheatgrass juice is nutritionally equivalent to almost 5 pounds of the best organic produce.
  • Wheatgrass contains a full spectrum of essential vitamins and minerals

 The purest method to make wheatgrass is with a good ol’ fashion mortar and pestle! I made some the other night and it was really fun and came out absolutely delicious. I’d like to share with you all the steps to making this powerful immune booster! 🙂

jackie1 All you will need is a mortar and pestle, water, scissors or a knife, cheese cloth, a cup and living wheatgrass!

jackie First step, cut enough wheatgrass to fill the bottom of your mortar. In order to grind the blades evenly it’s best to do a little at a time. When finished with the first pour start over again with the same amount of wheatgrass and water.

In a circular motion, grind the blades until they form somewhat of a gunky, shredded paste. Next, add enough water to cover at least ÂĽ of your mortar. Continue grinding the wheatgrass in the water until they get very light in color and the water is green. Finally cover the top of your cup with a piece of cheese cloth and pour in the juice. When finished gather the ground up blades into the cloth and make it into a little sac to squeeze the rest of the juice. Add a little lemon if you wish and enjoy!!!

I had to try this for myself, so I got out all my tools and got to grinding.
It was a little more muscle work than I anticipated, but that’s never a bad thing. I was psyched that it worked and I was able to have my very own wheat grass shot, prepared at home! It’s not wrong to serve up wheatgrass shots in my Vegan Beer Fest cup, is it?

Thank-you so much Jacqueline, for sharing the recipe!

Guest Post by My Sister Kristen: The Adventures of a First Time Juice Cleanser

Today, I should hopefully be in Paris! I have waiting for this day for a long time and promise to take an annoying amount of pictures to share.

This post is by my baby sister, Kristen. Kristen became a vegetarian just a few months after I did. Neither one of us have eaten meat for over 8 years. She has been making attempts to try out veganism lately, and even attempted her first juice cleanse. I will let her describe how it went.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~kristen `Hi everyone! My name is Kristen and I am Angelina’s youngest sister. While she’s out exploring the world, she has asked me to write a guest blog, so here I am!
Anyone who knows my sister knows that she cares about health, yoga and a lot of good food. One adventurous day I decided that being a vegetarian just wasn’t enough for me, I wanted to take my health to the next level and kick it off with a juice cleanse. I called up Angelina, who invited me over, made a days worth of juice for me, and sent me on my way. I was ready for my first ever one day juice cleanse.
Many people think that juice cleansing, dieting, exercising etc. is all mental. Well, it’s NOT. Your first ever detox will likely not be pleasant, particularly if you live in Southern California and have toxins swarming your body every single day. I got through work with flying colors but once I got home it really hit me. Now, I will say that a lot of it IS mental and I’m sure I made it worse on myself.. but I truly felt weak and miserable.
My head was aching. I had zero energy and I felt close to death (well, almost). I ended my day by begrudgingly drinking my dinner smoothie and going to sleep before 9. I literally dreamed about food all night.
After a week or two you begin to forget the pain and agony that you went through for 24 hours. In fact, you start to remember some of the good things about your experience.
I was crazy enough to try it again… and for 3 days this time.
Here’s where the fun began! Angelina bought me an amazing Breville juicer for my birthday, so I loaded up with fruits and veggies and got ready for my cleanse.
kristen 2I was nervous. I imagined 3 days of headaches and grogginess. But I couldn’t have been more wrong! It had been over a month since my first cleanse and I had been eating much healthier so my body wasn’t so filled with disgusting food rotting away in my system as it was the first time.
I survived day 1 with flying colors, I hardly even noticed the hunger. I couldn’t believe it, compared to my last juice cleanse this one was a breeze so far. I didn’t even dream about pizza that night.
Day 2 came and went. I had a bit of a mental breakdown after lunch when all of my co-workers went to one of my favorite places- Miguels Jr., but I sucked it up, made my favorite green tea and got through it, still headache free and more energy than ever.
kristen 3Typically, once I get home from work it’s a miracle if I can make it to the gym or make lunch for the next day. But on day 2 I went to work out, cleaned my room, washed all of the dishes, did a few loads of laundry AND still had energy to burn. Not an easy feat for someone who is known as an avid napper.
Now, day 3 is where I truly surprised myself. My sister Marcella is a photographer and was asked by Pura Vida Bracelets to shoot some photos of their product! Amazing, right?
Well, guess who she picked as one of her models… yours truly. So not only did we hike up to a waterfall, we hiked up Mt. Rubidoux. That’s right… day three of juice cleansing and I hiked two mountains. My energy was flying high as I was literally jumping from rock to rock. kristen 4I felt so great after my cleanse and even lost a few pounds, I can’t wait to try another and really hope I have encouraged someone who has never tried a juice cleanse to give it a try! I can’t promise that your first one will be easy (especially if you’re as overdramatic about life as I am) but I can promise that it’s a great and worthwhile experience..
kristen 5Happy juicing everyone!
Why Juice Cleanse?
Oh so many times when I explained to someone that I was on juice cleanse, their response was, “I could never do that.”
I never thought I could either. I was absolutely terrified to go an extended period time without food, oh, so precious FOOD. It took me a while to see the benefit of it and it definitely took me time to build up to 7 days. I started first with a 1 day, then after a month or so, did 2, then after some time, did 3, and eventually did 5. At the end of 5, I knew I would try 7. And, believe it or not, I feel ready to go for 10.
I feel stronger now, but I know I would have never been able to start doing this, without my husband doing it right along with me. I am not sure I would have been able to hang in there alone, and it would have driven me a little insane if he was cooking or eating while I was cleansing. We have done every juice cleanse together and I feel incredibly fortunate to have his support.
Juice cleansing was not my idea. It was his. I shot down the idea to do a detox or fast, many, MANY times, before I finally went for it, even with apprehension (and know I am NOT an easy person to convince or sway). I thought it would be fun for you all to hear from my husband, on why the heck we do this.
Introducing, Philip,
Why did you want to juice cleanse?
I wanted to juice fast because people have been fasting for years and it seemed logical to do something like that. For centuries people in many different societies around the world and many different parts of the globe have been fasting. It is mentioned in the Bible, Torah, and Quran that people fasted. One can only assume that as our genetic make up was evolving over the millions of years before our present day cornucopia of food that human beings must have needed a mechanism to deal with times of feast and famine. We are not designed to eat to satiation every day three times a day. I am not convinced that the FDA food pyramid is the end all be all of nutrition.
I had this theory that I ate far too many calories than I needed and after our first juice cleanse I realized that I ate way too much and that I pretty much have eaten too much my whole life.
I originally wanted to lose weight but it became more than that. It became a way for me to re-evaluate my entire life by realizing I don’t need as much as I think I do (not just in food, in everything). It made me realize how incredibly social the act of eating is, and how poorly (even as a vegan) I have been eating.
How has it changed the way you eat when you are not juice cleansing?
Counting nutrients, not calories. Eating more for nourishment than pleasure, or finding the pleasure in nourishment.
The cleanse is a way to store up nutrients for the times when you are not on the cleanse. In America we tend to see a meal as not being a good meal if we move away from it not “FULL”. The sensation of being full is just a mental trigger to tell you to stop eating. By juice cleansing, I noticed that this mechanism actually has a perpetual delay and that the act of being “full” really has nothing more to do with stuffing the little bag that is one’s stomach and not actually tied to the amount of nutrients and fuel being put in to the body.
After realizing this I have learned that I had to unlearn many years of (sorry mom) poor instruction about what and how much to eat.
What have been the benefits of juice cleansing?
  • Better digestion.
  • Weight loss.
  • Muscle gain.
  • Clearer skin.
  • Brighter eyes.
  • Clearer thoughts.
  • Improved sleep.
  • Increased energy.
What is the hardest thing about juice cleansing?
Being tempted by food that I want, (not need). I smell and see food, and psychologically want it, but it’s not what I need. I was seeking out calories and not nutrients. I got tons of nutrients from juices
The French word for food is “nouriture” nourishment, but how much nourishment was I actually getting from my food.
We as hunter gatherers naturally seek out food. In order to sustain ourselves through the millions of years of really rough times humans evolved to seek high calorie foods like fats and sugars. They are good to fill the belly but not nourish the body.
How has it changed your relationship with food?
I realized that most of the food that I eat is just fun food. Seeking out food, hunger and satiation is mostly psychological.
Do you think juice fasting is easy?
No. Eating is social and when you are not eating people can interpret it as you are not being social. It is also about unlearning everything you have been taught about how much and when to eat.
It has been one of the best things I have ever done. It showed me even though I am vegan, I still had a lot to learn about nutrition, the way my body worked, and how little I actually need to survive.
I will continue to juice fast for the rest of my life.
New Juice Recipes
Ever since completing a 5 day juice cleanse, back in January, my husband and I have been keeping up with a 1 day juice cleanse, every Monday. A once per week juice cleanse has been a nice way to keep up with gentle detoxing, and keep us MUCH more mindful of how we eat. Most Sundays, our kitchen looks like this:
I still like the recipes I used during the 5 day juice cleanse, (I posted them here), but I have been experimenting with a few new ones, so I do not get sick of the same ones, over and over.
A few of my new favorites:
1. Apple, turmeric, carrot and lemon
I have heard about all the health benefits of turmeric and wondered how it would taste in a juice, since I knew it had a spicy flavor. I went to a juice bar in Venice Beach, and tried an apple turmeric combo that was amazing! I added the golden beets and carrots for a little more sweetness:
The golden beets add a beautiful, yellow coloring and have a sweet taste:
I am calling this California juice because it had so many beautiful, refreshing, citrus notes.
As soon as I tasted it, I was inspired to begin singing the theme song for this show. I was surprised I remembered all the lyrics. Please tell me you do too!
3. Strawberries, melon, watermelon and mint:
This one was on the sweeter side, which is not always my favorite. It was refreshing and flavorful and could happily be enjoyed with some added rum 🙂
3 Day Juice Cleanse: Day 3 (Real Raw Live)
I woke up on Day 3 feeling much more energized (thankfully) and ecstatic that this was this last day of the cleanse.
7:00-I actually drank the juices in the correct order, and I started with a Green Vibrancy (organic kale, celery, cucumber, parsley and lemon) as I blogged.
Pretty soon, it was time for me to head out to yoga, for class and teacher training. I felt fairly energetic through class, and I got to this place mentally where I was content with being hungry. I heard my stomach growl a few times during class, and I felt strangely peaceful enough with that. I simply observed what I was feeling and did not dwell on it too much.
10:30-As soon as class was over, I started sipping my Liquid Lunchbox (organic carrot, green apple, beet, kale, lemon and ginger). This helped me not feel as hungry and I was able to focus on teacher training. As time went on, I started feeling my energy drop more and more. I felt like I was fading away. I kept chugging water to help revitalize me, but I stayed pretty lethargic.
9441832384_cac6ae32b1_o12:30-I drank my second Green Vibrancy (organic kale, celery, cucumber, parsley and lemon) (no picture take, oops!). This helped with feelings of hunger, but did nothing for my energy level, which was at a record low. For the remaining of the afternoon, I felt like I could barely keep my eyes open or move.
I know this is going to sound stupid, but yoga teacher training requires you to do a ton of yoga! Shocking, right?! By Sunday afternoons, everyone in class is a little tired from having done 3 days in a row of hours of classes, pose break downs, adjustments, etc. We were all feeling a bit drained, but I am sure my particular feelings of dying can be attributed to the cleanse.
3:30-When teacher training was finished, I slowly walked to my car and snapped this picture. I felt as pathetic as I look. After this was taken, I sipped down the Mental Bee Sting (organic carrot, pineapple, lime and ginger).
9441833558_f2e8032dec_o Once I was home, I wanted to collapse on the couch. However, I wanted to keep myself busy so I did not obsess over food, or go to sleep too soon and reck my night’s sleep. I ended up going thrift store shopping and found some new yoga tanks, then I took my dogs for a walk.
6:00-I drank down the Fat Burning Blueberryade (Secret recipe of organic anti-oxidant powder, organic whole lime and filtered water). This hardly helped my hunger or fatigue.
8:00-I was so happy that this was the last drink of the cleanse. I was really looking forward to going to sleep, because I wanted the day to be over, so I could live in a world again with solid food. I drank the Berry Grounding smoothie (sprouted organic buckwheat, mixed berries, organic banana, organic spirulina, blended with organic date water and ice) while settling in to read.
9439055247_5d3e0fc2e1_o I was asleep a little after 9:00. I felt completely spent, but proud that I had actually stuck it out!
Post Cleanse Thoughts:
The next morning I woke up surprised that I had survived! This is all very dramatic, but I never thought I would be able to stick to a 3 day juice cleanse. I was pretty proud of myself.
I woke up with a great surge of energy. Each night on the cleanse, my sleep improved more and more. I slept much more soundly and without waking through the night, which will happen on and off.
The most immediate change I noticed was with my skin. It looked more hydrated and healthy. My skin does not lie and will tell me if I am too dehydrated or eating poorly. It had a nice, healthy glow.
I also noticed my digestion was much better after the cleanse. I felt like I had rid myself of a lot of junk, and as I slowly filled myself back up with clean, healthy food, I was digesting it faster and easier.
I did not do this cleanse to lose weight, but I did lose 2 pounds in those 3 days, which I am sure was mostly water weight. However, I did feel that this was a great kick off to the Crazy Sexy Diet, which I started again on August 2nd, and will be completing till August 23rd.
A quick tip if you do a juice cleanse; stay away from Instagram, blogs, etc. that show food. I follow a few of my favorite vegans, and I was salivating over some of their yummy posts. It only made me more grouchy about what I was missing.
From this cleanse, I realized that most of my hunger is psychological. I often think I am hungry because it is a certain time of day or because a smell or sight prompts me to think of food. I only felt true hunger, on the last day of the cleanse, and it was pretty mild. I was never seriously malnourished by any means, despite what my dramatic mind may have conjured.
Thoughts of Real Raw Live:
I was very pleased with the quality and taste of juices. I found them all to be fresh, vibrant and delicious. I like the earthy, healthy flavor of green juice, so each drink was welcomed and enjoyed.
Their juice cleanse packages are extremely convenient. I did not have do anything, except pick them up. I did not have to clean my juicer or think about what to add to it. It is a high price to pay, however, I felt that it was reasonable, especially for the quality and convenience of what you get.
I will definitely visit there more to try every smoothie and juice on the menu, and maybe if I get really brave, I will try the 5 day cleanse.
I hope this gave you a good overview of what a 3 day juice cleanse entails. I am happy to answer any questions if you felt I left anything out, or if there is something more specific, you would like to know.
3 Day Juice Cleanse-Day 2 (Real Raw Live)
This day started off a little rocky. I went to pick up my juices around 6:30, only to find that Real Raw Live did not open till 8. I made the mistake of assuming they opened each day at 6, but Saturday is the one exception.
I had to be at my yoga studio at 8:00, for meditation, followed by vinyasa class at 9:00, then teacher training until 3:30.
Fortunately, my husband played delivery man, picked up the juices and brought them to the yoga studio where I found them waiting for me, after meditation.
8:45-After meditation was over, I took a few sips of the Fat Burning Blueberryade (Secret recipe of organic anti-oxidant powder, organic whole lime and filtered water). I was HUNGRY at this point, and disappointed I did not have a juice earlier in the morning. However, I had hot yoga class in 15 minutes, so I did not want to drink too much.
10:30-As soon as class was over, I ran to the cooler, to finish off the Fat Burning Blueberryade and Berry Grounding smoothie (sprouted organic buckwheat, mixed berries, organic banana, organic spirulina, blended with organic date water and ice). Once again, I purposely saved this filling drink for after class. Strangely enough, I felt much more energized after class, even though I did it on a virtually empty stomach. I think part of it can be attributed to how well I slept the night before.
9430534607_9ae3b7a348_o 12:00-This was our break time during yoga teacher training. I sipped the Green Vibrancy (organic kale, celery, cucumber, parsley and lemon) while I read and journaled. I was not very hungry at this point, but I thoroughly enjoyed the fresh tasting greens.
3:30-I chugged a Liquid Lunch Box (organic carrot, green apple, beet, kale, lemon and ginger) as soon as I was finished with teacher training. This is when things grew more difficult. I was done with my Saturday routine, and usually, I start planning dinner or we go out to eat. Another point of difficulty was that I needed to stop at Trader Joe’s, to buy our weekly groceries. I intended to do this during the week, but I did not make time for it, like I should have. DO NOT GO GROCERY SHOPPING WHILE ON A JUICE CLEANSE. I was staring at all the food like this:
I sipped on my Liquid Lunch Box through the store, but everything looked so much better than my little bottle.
5:00-After putting away groceries and showering, I was antsy and hungry. It could have been psychological, after the Trader Joe’s bombardment of food and smells, and the realization that I still had over 24 hours of this, I started getting kooky. I am not even sure if I was really hungry, but I drank the Mental Bee Sting (organic carrot, pineapple, lime and ginger), at this point.
My husband and I knew we needed to get out of the house. We were both gazing longingly at the kitchen and would have loved to start a big pasta dinner with wine. All we wanted to do was this:
Instead, we decided to go to our local coffee shop, sip mint tea and surf the internet.
9:00-The distraction of being away from home helped, but we were both really wanting some food. Someone, who was not me, was also particularly irritable, it seems like all we could think about was food. I drank my last juice of the day, Forever Green (organic kale, celery, green apple, cilantro, lemon), and headed off to read in bed. I seriously just wanted to go to sleep, so that I could hurry up and be on the last day of the cleanse.
Final thoughts on Day 2: This was the hardest day, psychologically. We had one day behind us, and the one day ahead of us felt daunting and discouraging. Saturday was also particularly hard, because normally in the evenings we cook big meals, enjoy wine or go out to eat. I do not think I was every really physically hungry, I think it was much more psychological than anything. However, my energy was crashing by about 6:00 PM. I quickly fell asleep around 9:30.
Because Real Raw Live is closed on Sundays, on Saturday, we picked up 2 days worth of juices. This is what our refrigerator looked like, 2 days of juices, for 2 people.
Check back for Day 3 and Final Recap…
